Agility Glossary: English ↔ German

Agility · Equipment · Rules · Handling

Find the words for your course.

At training, an international competition or while reading rules in another language, one unfamiliar agility term can change your understanding. What does the German “Laufsteg” mean? How does a refusal differ from another fault? And do Mini, Midi and Maxi mean the same thing everywhere? This glossary brings together 360 term pairs covering equipment, courses, timing, faults, classes and handling techniques.

How to read this glossary

R = regulation and event terminology; spelling may be normalised. P = documented practice and reporting usage. E = our descriptive translation, not an asserted official wording. H = historical term with a limitation. Alternative terms appear in parentheses.

The table contains all 360 term pairs and their alternatives. The PDF includes the full German and English context notes and all 50 sources. Labels such as FCI/VDH, IRJGV, AKC and UKI identify the applicable system.

Understanding height categories

FCI / VDHHeight at the withers
Small (S)< 35 cm
Medium (M)≥ 35 cm and < 43 cm
Intermediate (I)≥ 43 cm and < 48 cm
Large (L)≥ 48 cm

These limits apply to FCI/VDH. In 2026, IRJGV defines Mini up to 38 cm, Midi from 38.1 to 48 cm and Maxi from 48.1 cm. This is a separate system. The Royal Kennel Club, AKC, UKI and WAO also use classifications of their own. Body height and jump height are different measurements.

Level, type of round or event?

  • Competition level: FCI Agility 1–3; VDH also has A0. In VDH, eligibility for Jumping 0–3 follows the corresponding Agility level.
  • Type of round: Agility includes contact obstacles; Jumping does not. Games such as Snooker and Gamblers have their own rules.
  • Other systems: British Grades 1–7, AKC Novice/Open/Excellent/Master and UKI Beginners/Novice/Senior/Champion cannot simply be converted into A0–A3.
  • Names with different meanings: Open may be an AKC level or an open competition. Senior is a UKI skill level; in SAO it relates to the handler’s age.

Important translation distinctions

  • Equipment: Laufsteg = dog-walk; Slalom = weave poles; the FCI Doppelhürde = spread hurdle. The German fester Tunnel means the flexible tube tunnel. Tunnel bags are not flat tunnels.
  • Time: SCT = Standard Course Time (Standardzeit), MCT = Maximum Course Time (Maximalzeit). Formulas and rounding depend on the rule system.
  • Faults: refusal = Verweigerung; missed contact = Kontaktzonenfehler; elimination = Disqualifikation. A recorded fault and its penalty points are different quantities.
  • Source editions: Current English FCI documents were compared with German federation wording. Where rules have changed, VDH’s German translations from 2023 are used only as language evidence.
