Working Dog Heat Safety: Why Your Dog Shouldn't Carry a Bite Sleeve After Training

“Don’t leave your dog in the car.” Everyone knows that warning.

Another risk is often underestimated even by experienced dog handlers: In warm weather, a dog should not carry anything in its mouth for an extended period immediately after work — no bite sleeve, no toy, and no dumbbell. At the very moment when the dog urgently needs to release heat, it must be able to pant freely and effectively.

How Dogs Regulate Their Body Temperature

Dogs can only sweat to a very limited extent. They therefore release a large proportion of excess heat through breathing: when panting, moisture evaporates from the tongue, oral mucosa, and airways.

For this to work, air must be able to flow across these surfaces as freely as possible.

If a dog is carrying an object in its mouth, it cannot open its mouth fully or move its tongue freely. Depending on the size and shape of the object, effective panting can be restricted. The dog can still breathe — but its ability to dissipate heat is reduced.

That is why, in warm weather, carrying an object is not a sensible reward immediately after intense exercise.

The Critical Moment Comes Immediately After Work

After protection work, obedience, retrieving, or intense play, heat production does not stop instantly.

The dog has built up heat during exercise. Even after the exercise has ended, its body temperature may continue to rise initially. This is exactly when the bite sleeve or toy often remains in the dog’s mouth as a reward.

The dog may look satisfied, leave the field carrying its reward, or take it all the way back to the car. At the same time, however, it cannot pant as freely as it needs to during this phase.

The Simple Rule for Training in Hot Weather

As soon as the intense work is over:

  • Remove the bite sleeve, toy, or dumbbell from the dog’s mouth.
  • Allow the dog to pant freely.
  • Stop the activity and move to a shaded, well-ventilated area.
  • Offer water in a controlled manner.
  • If the dog is clearly overheated, actively cool it with water.

You can reward the dog in other ways — for example with food, a brief calm interaction, or another short play session after the dog has cooled down sufficiently.

Cooling Dogs Correctly: Water, Not Myths

Many myths persist around cooling overheated dogs. One of them is that cold water is dangerous and that only lukewarm water should be used.

Current research does not support this blanket warning. In cases of exercise-induced overheating, cooling with cool to cold water can be effective and safe. What matters most is that cooling begins immediately and is not delayed because of fear of a supposed “cold-water shock.” (PubMed)

What Is Practical in the Field

If enough water is available, the dog can be thoroughly wetted over a large area of the body. Applying water to the body, head, and neck supports heat loss — especially when airflow is also present.

A study involving twelve working dogs compared several field-based cooling methods. Trained, voluntary head immersion in cool water — combined with limited water intake — was the only method studied that prevented the initial continued rise in body temperature after exercise. However, this method is only suitable for responsive dogs that participate voluntarily and can briefly interrupt panting. (AVMA Journals)

In this study, a wet towel placed around the neck or in the armpit areas was less effective. Most importantly, a wet towel should not remain wrapped around the dog like an insulating blanket.

Motivation Can Mask Warning Signs

Highly motivated and highly aroused dogs do not always stop an exercise at the right time on their own.

They continue working, re-engage, refuse to release the toy, or still appear extremely willing to perform. That does not mean their body temperature is safe.

Studies in working dogs show that well-trained dogs can reach very high body temperatures during exercise. In one field study, temperatures of up to 42.4 °C were recorded. Individual working duration could not be predicted from core temperature or general fitness alone. One important factor was how efficiently each dog could dissipate heat through breathing. A fit dog is therefore not automatically protected from overheating. The handler must control the workload.

Temperature Alone Is Not Enough

The air temperature is not the only factor that determines how stressful training is for a dog.

High humidity reduces evaporation and therefore makes cooling through panting less effective. Direct sunlight, lack of wind, warm ground, dense coat, body type, fitness level, arousal, and exercise intensity all increase heat load further.

That is why there is no single outdoor temperature below which every training session is automatically safe.

An intense protection session at 25 °C with high humidity and full sun can be more critical than a short, controlled session at a higher temperature in dry, well-ventilated conditions.

Recognize Warning Signs Early

Do not wait for collapse. Possible signs of increasing overheating include:

  • unusually heavy or prolonged panting
  • a tongue that is extended very far, appears broad, or looks flattened
  • excessive drooling
  • a glassy or absent expression
  • declining coordination
  • unusual restlessness or sudden weakness
  • failure to respond to familiar cues
  • vomiting or diarrhea
  • collapse

A single sign does not prove heatstroke. However, if several abnormalities occur or the dog’s behavior changes noticeably, the activity must stop immediately.

If serious overheating is suspected, cool the dog immediately and arrange veterinary assistance without delay. Cooling should begin before and continue during transport.

What Research on Working Dogs Shows

Findings from police and military working dogs are also relevant to dog sports. These dogs often work with high motivation and arousal, under time pressure, and in difficult environmental conditions.

Fitness Alone Is Not Enough

How well a dog tolerates heat depends on more than conditioning and willingness to work. The ability to release heat through breathing, the tongue, skin, and circulation also varies from dog to dog. (Frontiers)

Body Temperature Can Continue to Rise After Exercise Ends

Several studies show an initial continued rise in body temperature after intense exercise has ended. That is exactly why the first few minutes after work are especially important. (AVMA Journals)

Targeted Cooling Can Support Recovery

Cooling vests can help under certain conditions. In a study involving military working dogs, both an evaporative cooling vest and a phase-change cooling vest improved some thermal measurements. The evaporative version showed the stronger effect. However, this is not permission to extend the workload: cooling supports good workload management, but it does not replace it. (MDPI)

Models Can Make Heat Stress More Predictable

Thermal models have been developed for military working dogs that take factors such as body size, activity, and environmental conditions into account. They are designed to help estimate body temperature, working duration, and required recovery periods more accurately. For the training field, however, the most important conclusion remains simple: control the workload, stop early, and cool actively. (ScienceDirect)

Hot-Weather Training Checklist

  • Schedule intense sessions during the cooler morning or evening hours.
  • Take humidity, direct sunlight, and lack of wind into account.
  • Keep exercises shorter and plan recovery breaks in advance.
  • Immediately remove the bite sleeve, toy, or dumbbell from the dog’s mouth after work.
  • Allow the dog to pant freely.
  • Provide shade, airflow, and enough water.
  • Plan to use water not only for drinking, but also for active cooling.
  • Watch the dog — not just the thermometer.
  • If clear warning signs appear, begin cooling immediately and arrange veterinary assistance.

The Most Important Rule

After intense work in warm conditions, the rule is simple: first clear the dog’s mouth. Then allow the dog to pant and cool down. Everything else comes afterward.
