Patricia: Klaus, congratulations! Judging by the reaction of the crowd at the BSP, you and Jim vom Messina were clearly the people's champions. Why do you think that is?
Klaus: Hi! I think Jim is the first German Show Line Shepherd since the early 1990s to compete successfully both at the Sieger Show and at the BSP. He had already built a good reputation beforehand because of his outstanding protection performance at the 2022 Sieger Show. He had also shown some very solid performances at regional championship events before that.
Patricia: Is it really that rare for a dog from show lines to perform at this level?
Klaus: There are certainly well-bred show line dogs with excellent working ability. Especially in protection work, there are dogs with a lot of potential. But in nearly 40 years, I have never owned a dog quite like Jim.
He absolutely loves working in all three phases and is incredibly trainable. My partner had already trained several dogs from the Messina kennel, and they showed a similar level of drive and enthusiasm. So we hoped this dog might be capable of more than just local club-level trials.
Patricia: Many people know Jim by his nickname. What do you call him?
Klaus: At home, Jim is simply "Psycho" or "Psych." The name came about because from the very first day he only wanted to play and work. He was like a little maniac. At first people laughed whenever I called him that. Nowadays, most people agree that the name fits him perfectly.
Patricia: Success at this level is rarely a solo effort. You're involved with several teams, aren't you?
Klaus: In the show world, I've been working with Nathalie Prachensky for many years, and we've had some success together. The preparation may differ, but whether you're aiming for success in working trials or conformation, it always requires an enormous amount of work. If you want to stay competitive, you have to keep learning and improving.
At the BSP, we were fortunate to be welcomed into Wolfgang Russ's team, and they supported us exceptionally well.
One thing we're particularly proud of is our obedience. My partner Astrid and I built that entirely on our own. Anyone who knows that I've spent decades handling show line dogs knows that body language and handler assistance had become second nature to me. Removing those habits was probably the biggest challenge, and Astrid needed a lot of patience with me throughout that process.
In protection work, Tobias Wunderlich helped me tremendously in the beginning. After our first regional championship, I then had the opportunity to work with Florian Knabl and Andi Kreis. Together with Martin Lanzinger and Steffi Ollmann, that became the ultimate team for us. It simply doesn't get any better.
Patricia: Hopefully we'll continue seeing you at many major events. What are your next goals?
Klaus: That's a difficult question. We definitely want to set a new goal for next year and continue representing the show line community in a positive way. What exactly that will be, we'll discuss and decide together as a team.
About Jim vom Messina
Jim vom Messina has become one of the most talked-about German Shepherds in recent years because he successfully bridges two worlds that are often viewed separately: conformation and high-level working competition.
His performances at both the Sieger Show and the SV Bundessiegerprüfung demonstrated that strong working ability can still be found within carefully selected show line breeding programs. Combined with exceptional drive, trainability, and athleticism, Jim has become a symbol of what is possible when genetics, training, and teamwork come together.
For many spectators at the BSP 2023, that combination made Jim and Klaus Sievers the true champions of the crowd.
